An urn garden is a garden built for urns instead of caskets. The urn is buried in the ground and marked the same way any other grave would be, but everything is scaled to an urn, so it feels more like a garden than a lawn section. There are two here: the Lake Urn Garden on the lake shore, and the Rose Urn Garden in the Garden of Flowers.
What an Urn Garden Is
An urn garden is a garden built for urns instead of caskets. The urn is buried in the ground and marked the same way any other grave would be. Everything is scaled to an urn rather than a casket, so the spaces, the planting and the memorials are smaller, and it feels more like a garden than a lawn section.
Washington Memorial Park has two: the Lake Urn Garden, on the shore of the lake at the south end of the park, and the Rose Urn Garden, in the Garden of Flowers.
The Two Gardens

The lake, its two fountains and the magnolias above it are the setting. Alongside the ground spaces this is the only garden in the park offering urns placed in boulders near the water and cremation posts. Endowment care of $825 is added to the space price.

Rose Urn Garden
A planted garden rather than a waterside one, laid out in rings with benches around it. It is the quieter of the two and the one families choose when they want the garden itself, not the view. The price is the same inside or outside the rose perimeter. Endowment care of $660 is added to the space price.

Three Ways to Be Placed
In the ground. The urn is placed in a garden space and marked with a bronze memorial set flush with the lawn, exactly as a grave would be. Available in both gardens. Opening and closing $875.
In a boulder. The urn goes inside a natural boulder set near the water at the Lake Urn Garden, closed with a bronze cap carrying the inscription. Opening and closing $1,425.
In a cremation post. A low granite post standing in the garden bed, holding the urn above ground with the bronze memorial on its face. Memorial from $5,670.
In the ground
The urn is placed in a garden space and marked with a bronze memorial set flush with the lawn, exactly as a grave would be. Available in both gardens.
In a boulder
The urn goes inside a natural boulder set near the water at the Lake Urn Garden. The boulder is closed with a bronze cap carrying the inscription.
In a cremation post
A low granite post standing in the garden bed, holding the urn above ground with the bronze memorial on its face. Also called a Cremorial unit.
