What a burial vault is, what each one is made of, and what it costs.
A burial vault is a lined, sealed container that the casket goes into. It carries the weight of the earth above it and of the mowers and backhoes that pass over the grave, and it keeps water out. It is also what stops the ground settling into a dip over the grave, which is why the cemetery asks for one.

They are made of high-strength concrete with a metal or plastic liner inside. That is as much as you can do to protect a casket in the ground.
The other thing you'll hear about is an outer burial container, sometimes called a gravebox. That's a plain concrete box with drainage holes in it, so ground water runs straight through. It holds the ground up, but it doesn't keep water out, and it isn't lined or sealed. That's the whole difference between the two.
There are three levels. All three are reinforced concrete. What changes between them is what the concrete is lined with on the inside and covered with on the outside.
